User-centered design occurs at all stages of the project life cycle, not just as a validation of the product at the end. In many ways, the most critical user input occurs in the earliest stages of product development.
Building efficient navigation and labeling sections of web/application content must be done with the user in mind. Several techniques can be utilized to accomplish an information architecture that is consistent, concise, and in the context of its intended audience.
Monica A. Fry and Bill Holman of National City will outline and explore two such techniques- Affinity Diagramming and Card Sorting- in a manner that explains the value of gathering user input long before any investment has been made in design/redesign work.
