Topic
"Cognitive Walkthrough: A Usability Evaluation That Does Not Require Users"
There are three major categories of usability evaluation methods:
- Evaluations without users
- Evaluations with users
- Evaluations based on actual usage
This presentation and breakout exercise covers the Cognitive Walkthrough methodology which will be presented followed by a breakout session that either demonstrates the method/or (depending on group size) allows several groups to try it out.
What are Cognitive Walkthroughs?
Cognitive Walkthroughs are a design review method that you can use early in your product's lifecycle. "Cognitive" refers to the process of watching users interact with product while they:
- set goals
- search for alternatives that will advance them towards their goal
- select an alternative
- evaluate outcomes to monitor progress towards goal
Preparing for this kind of activity is simple:
- identify the tasks you want users to complete
- write down the alternatives that users should select to complete the task successfully
- recruit some users
Come to NEOUPA's May 25th meeting to learn all the details, participate in a sample cognitive walkthrough, and see for yourself how informative this user-centered design methodology can be.
